About Play Word Scramble

A word scramble takes a real English word, mixes its letters, and challenges you to put them back in order. Play Word Scramble gives you that classic puzzle three ways: a daily themed board of 8-12 scrambled words that is identical for every player, an unlimited mode with endless rounds across three difficulty levels, and shareable custom puzzles made with the free generator.

The daily puzzle is built around a theme — animals, weather, kitchen words, space — with an optional clue under every rack of letters. Tap or drag the letter tiles into the answer slots, type the letters on a keyboard, shuffle the rack when you're stuck, or spend a hint to lock the next correct letter in place. Solve every word to keep your streak alive, then compare your time with the spoiler-free share card.

Difficulty in a good scramble is more than word length. Our puzzles grade on how far the letters move from their original positions, how many repeated letters hide in the rack, and how common the answer word is in everyday English — so an easy round feels friendly to kids and learners while a hard round makes experienced solvers work for every word.

Beyond the game, the site includes two free tools: a word unscrambler that turns any rack of up to fifteen letters into every word it can spell, and a word scramble generator that turns your own word list into a printable worksheet with a separate answer key. Teachers use the generator for spelling and vocabulary practice; party hosts use it for baby showers and trivia nights. Everything works in the browser with no signup, no downloads, and no daily paywall.

FAQ

A new themed daily puzzle is published every day at midnight, US Eastern time. Every past daily stays playable in the archive, and unlimited mode has no daily limit at all.

Difficulty combines word length, how common the word is, repeated letters, and how far the letters move when scrambled. Easy rounds use short familiar words with gentle mixing; hard rounds use longer or rarer words where nothing of the original order survives.

Each hint locks the next correct letter into your answer, starting from the first wrong or empty slot. Reveal shows the whole word if you want to move on. Hints are counted on your results but never blocked.

Some letter sets spell several real words (like melon and lemon). Daily puzzles either accept every valid anagram or include a clue that points at one intended answer, so you are never wrong on a technicality.

Yes — the free generator turns any word list into a puzzle. Add optional clues, pick a difficulty, then print a worksheet with a separate answer key or copy a private link your friends or students can play online.

Yes. The word unscrambler takes up to 15 letters (with up to two ? wildcards) and lists every word they can spell, grouped by length and ranked by how common each word is.
